License conversion in Japan by country: who needs the written test
We have pages for 16 countries: 10 where license holders take both the written test (50 true/false statements, 30 minutes, pass at 45) and the practical driving test, 5 on the exemption list of 29 countries and regions where neither is needed, and the United States, where it depends on the state (7 states skip both tests, Indiana skips only the practical test). Each page shows the Japanese translation options and the country-specific documents from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, with sources and the date we checked them.
