Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Japan license conversion written test?
Since October 1, 2025 the knowledge test of the foreign license conversion has 50 true/false statements and a 30-minute time limit, according to a National Police Agency notice of January 8, 2026.
What is the pass mark?
45 of 50 (90%). With fewer than 45 correct answers you cannot go on to the practical driving test.
Can I take the written test in English?
Yes. Prefectural police pages (for example Kanagawa and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department) list 20 foreign languages including English, plus Japanese. There is no single nationwide list, so check with your license center.
Are there pictures on the test?
No. The illustrated questions of the old 10-question test were removed; the current test is text only.
Are these the questions from the test?
No. The test questions are not published. Our statements are original practice statements written from the National Police Agency's rules for road traffic and the law texts, and each one links to the rule it comes from.
Do I have to take the written test?
It depends on where your license was issued. Holders of a license from 29 countries and regions (for the United States, only 7 states) take neither the written nor the practical test; a license from Indiana needs the written test only. Use the checker.
Is the practice test free?
Yes. One full 50-statement mock test with the result and every explanation is free, with no sign-up.
